A "cheeky" van driver who was on the road without insurance secretly bought a policy online while he was being questioned by police.

The motorist was pulled over on the M25 near Staines by police conducting routine checks today.

As they asked the man to produce his insurance documents, he went online and purchased a policy.

But officers were quick to pick up on the ruse and said he would "still be dealt with" for having no insurance and no MOT.

Surrey Roads Police posted on Twitter: "Stopped a van with no MOT and a question over his insurance. While conducting our roadside checks, the cheeky chap bought insurance online."

They later joked the van driver appeared to have a "guilty conscience", writing: "He will still be dealt with for having no insurance when we stopped him, and for no MOT. Seems like a guilty conscience to us".

A Surrey Police spokesman later said the man, who is aged in his 30s, was given a £200 fine and six points on his licence.
