A suspected drug driver has been charged with killing a health service worker in a hit-and-run crash as she was walking to donate teddy bears to a charity shop.

Nicky Pitt, 49, is accused of being behind the wheel of a Ford Kuga which struck 52-year-old Sharon Young in Blackfen Road, Sidcup, on November 6 last year.

The car involved in the crash allegedly left the scene of the collision without stopping, as Ms Young, a long-time staff member at Queen Mary’s NHS Hospital in Sidcup, lay injured on the ground. She was tended to at the roadside by neighbours before being taken to hospital, but died from her injuries the following day.

A friend said the popular churchgoer had been talking about donating teddy bears to a nearby charity shortly before the crash.

Pitt, from Welling, has been charged with causing Ms Young’s death while disqualified from driving and not having insurance, drug driving, failing to stop at the crash scene, failing to report the incident to police, and driving without a licence or insurance.

Pitt is accused of having cocaine in his system at the time of the crash. He appeared to face the charges for the first time at Bromley magistrates’ court on October 3, but did not enter any pleas. Deputy district judge Henry Gordon freed Pitt on bail as he sent the case to Woolwich Crown Court.

After Ms Young’s death, a neighbour took in her beloved dog, Benji.
