A lorry driver has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a cyclist was crushed to death.

The 35-year-old cyclist, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the A13 in Barking, east London, yesterday morning.

He is the 13th cyclist to have died on London’s roads so far this year, a statistic that is likely to fuel calls for urgent steps to improve road safety.

Earlier this month Sofoklis Kostoulas, 31, from Bow, died after being crushed beneath the wheels of a HGV lorry despite several attempts by medics to save his life.

Two other cyclists have died this year in HGV-related incidents. Two cyclists have been killed by coaches, six in collision with cars and one by a black cab.

The latest crash happened close to the Ship And Shovel pub in Barking, east London.

A Met Police spokesman said the crash took place in Ripple Road at 10.23am yesterday morning.

“A post-mortem examination and inquest will be scheduled in due course.

“The driver of the lorry, a 57-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“He was taken into custody at an east London police station and subsequently bailed, pending further investigation.”
