Former professional footballer turned pundit and TV presenter Dion Dublin has blasted a woman he says racially abused him.

The retired player, who used to play at centre-forward and centre-back, said it was the first time he has received such comments in around 15 years.

Taking to Twitter after the incident in Chesterfield, Mr Dublin said: "For the first time in about 15 years-ish i got RACIALLY ABUSED today in Chesterfield.

“I honestly thought we were getting somewhere but obviously not, there’s still that minority that have a lack of EDUCATION & RESPECT! Calling someone a ‘BB’ isn’t acceptable in 2018!!”

He ended the post with “#RACIST” and subsequently stated the abuser was a woman in her late twenties to early thirties.

An outpouring of support came in for the star.

Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves wrote: “Mate I am staggered. Horrible. Do not for one second think that person is anything than a complete and utter pleb.”

Others said they were “disgusted” and “horrified”.

Derbyshire Constabulary has not had an official report of the incident, but the force would encourage Mr Dublin to make one.

A spokesperson said: “It’s the kind of thing we take seriously and we could encourage him to report it to us.”

Mr Dublin had a long playing career, featuring for Cambridge United, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Leicester City.

He ended his career at Norwich in 2008 and also has four England caps.

Since hanging up his boots he has worked for Sky Sports and also presented multiple BBC shows or appeared on panels.

He has also been a part of the presenting team for Homes Under The Hammer since 2015.

The Standard has contacted a representative of Mr Dublin to ask if he will be commenting further.
