Former boxing champion Michael Watson and his carer were targeted by thugs in an horrific attempted carjacking in east London.

Watson, 51, who was put in a coma by Chris Eubank in 1991, and Lennard Ballack were reportedly attacked as they drove on The Ridgeway, in Chingford, on Thursday.

Two men smashed a VW Golf into the back of the pair’s car before approaching the vehicle.

As Mr Ballack left the car he was sprayed with a noxious substance and punched to the floor, the Daily Mail reported.

Watson was then reportedly dragged along the street after his arm became tangled in a seat belt.

Mr Ballack told the Daily Mail: “The door flung open and one man went to our car and the other guy sprayed me with what I later found out was ammonia.

“I felt helpless because I was fighting for my life.

“It was horrific. It was like a Western movie when the cowboy gets dragged along by a horse. He was going at least 50mph.”

Both men were rushed to an east London hospital.

The attackers fled in a different vehicle following the attack which happened shortly before 5pm, Scotland Yard said.

The victims were discharged from hospital on Saturday.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called at 4.53pm on Thursday, February 16, to reports of an attempted robbery on The Ridgeway in Chingford.

“Two men, aged in their 50s, informed officers that they had been sprayed in the face with a suspected noxious substance by two suspects who attempted to steal the car.

“The male suspects fled the scene in a different vehicle.

"The victims were assessed at the scene by the London Ambulance Service before being taken to an east London hospital for further treatment; their injuries are not life-threatening.

“There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”

Anyone with information should contact officers at Waltham Forest via 101.
