A man was left lying face down in a pool of his own blood after a vicious attack by a gang of men at an east London station this weekend.

Witnesses said the 30-year-old was "hit with sticks then stabbed in the head by a gang" at Forest Gate station.

Pictures from the scene showed the man lying face down in a pool of blood next to chipped pieces of wood after the attack in which he suffered "lacerations" to his head.

The victim was set upon by five men after being followed into the station just before 4pm on Sunday, according to detectives.

A British Transport Police spokesman added: "A 30-year-old man is currently in hospital receiving treatment for a number of injuries, including a laceration to his head.

"Detectives are currently pursuing several lines of enquiry, including reviewing CCTV footage from the station and surrounding areas."

His injuries are not said to be life threatening and he was today recovering in hospital, police said.

Kristian Clifton, who saw the aftermath of the attack, said: "I arrived at the station as the police were shutting the doors and stopping anyone else going in.

"Apparently it was a gang of men shouting and hitting a guy with sticks then one stabbed him in the head.

"When I arrived the police had just arrived and shut the station and they had loads of police dogs and officers everywhere.

"Then they locked the side gate so that nobody could get in or out."

The attack caused the station to close for a "short time" afterwards.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to Woodgrange Road at 3.55pm to reports of an assault.

"We sent an ambulance crew to the scene and treated one patient, a man reported to be in his 20s.

"The man was taken to hospital as a priority."

Police said there were no arrests, and urged anyone with information to call them on 0800 40 50 40, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
