Police have launched a fresh appeal to find the killer of a doctor murdered outside his home in north London five years ago today.

Dr Imran Farooq, 50, was repeatedly stabbed with a kitchen knife with a five-and-a-half inch blade and received blunt trauma to the head, believed to have been caused by a house brick.

The doctor, who was a prominent politician in his native Pakistan, was on his way back to his home in Green Lane, Edgware, when the attack happened at 5.30pm on September 16, 2010.

A murder investigation was launched and detectives from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command have so far spoken to 4,555 people, reviewed 7,697 documents, followed by 2,423 lines of inquiry and seized 4,325 exhibits.

A Metropolitan Police Service spokesman said: “Dr Farooq’s murder would have required careful planning and help from other people, some of whom may have provided assistance or information unwittingly.

“We understand that people may have concerns about speaking to the police and would like to offer reassurance that information will be dealt with sensitively.”

Today officers have re-released pictures of Moshin Ali Syed, 30, and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran, 36, two people wanted in connection with the murder.

Both Pakistani nationals left the UK on the night of the killing but Scotland Yard today dismissed reports in Pakistan media that the two men had been detained earlier this year at a border crossing from Afghanistan.

Dr Farooq was a founding member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the biggest political force in Karachi, and was killed close to its London headquarters.

Detectives have been investigating whether the murder was linked to his plans to break away from the MQM leadership and launch a new, independent political career.

Three men previously arrested in connection with the investigation were all released without charge,
