George Galloway’s former secretary and a Scotland Yard anti-terrorism officer have been arrested on suspicion of data protection offences.

Aisha Ali-Khan and her husband Detective Inspector Afiz Khan were arrested on Wednesday by police investigating “dirty tricks” allegations by the Respect MP.

Ms Ali-Khan, 32, was suspended by Mr Galloway in October after he accused her of being a Met police “agent” who was running an undercover operation from his constituency office. The MP for Bradford West also claimed Mr Khan had entered his London home and stayed the night without his consent. He accused the officer of using Facebook and fake email accounts to attack him.

Scotland Yard said the arrests were not connected to the original claims.

Police confirm they have received a complaint about how Mr Galloway got hold of private emails between the couple. The MP has denied hacking or authorising anyone to hack emails on his behalf.

Mr Khan is suspected of misusing police databases and has been placed on restricted duties. He and Ms Ali-Khan have been bailed until March.
