A five-year-old girl told today of her terror after a pair of teenagers punched the "baby in mummy's tummy" during a street robbery.

Nathaniel Moffett, 16, and Thaberi Francis, 18, targeted women and children in a spate of knife muggings.

The pair were named, shamed and jailed after the pregnant woman's daughter, who saw the attack, wrote a heartrending note to the judge.

At Bristol crown court, Judge Simon Darwall-Smith lifted the ban on naming Moffett because of his age.

The court heard the attack took place in the car park of Morrisons supermarket in Fishponds, Bristol, last October. In the letter, the girl, who was not identified, wrote: "To Judge, I'm terrified what happened at Morrisons.

"The boy punched my mum and hit the baby in her tummy. The other boy made sure nobody was looking. Now I don't like going shopping. I hope they don't hurt any more people."

Judge Darwall-Smith sentenced Francis to six years in jail and Moffett to five years in custody.

He said: "These offences are the kind the public fear most - that is, to see weapon robberies in public, at times when people are going about their normal business."

The court heard Moffett took the lead in many of the attacks in Bristol during October and November last year.

It is believed that the woman and her unborn baby were not seriously injured.

DC Paul Hopes said: "It is only by chance nobody has been seriously hurt. A street robbery is a traumatic crime for most victims. I can only hope that the sentence passed today brings some comfort to their victims."

Moffett and Francis, both of Bristol, admitted five robberies, three attempted robberies and possessing a bladed article.
