A six-year-old girl has been mauled by a dog in an attack in north Staffordshire.

Medics said the child suffered extensive facial injuries and had been flown to hospital following the incident in Stoke-on-Trent this morning.

She was said to be in a serious but stable condition.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said emergency crews were called to a property in Etruria at 10.15am today.

"Crews arrived to find a six-year-old girl who had sustained multiple bite wounds to her face after reportedly being attacked by a dog," she added.

"The girl, who was understandably upset, was given pain relief to help ease her discomfort before ambulance staff assessed her nasty wounds and carefully applied dressings."

She girl was then airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital for further emergency care and surgery.

The dog involved is believed to be a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
