A man who carried out a “cowardly and horrific” knife attack that left the victim technically dead for 20 minutes has been jailed for life.

Taner Saltan, 28, was in a group of people who attacked the 39-year-old man as he celebrated Christmas with friends in Green Lanes, north London in 2019.

The victim was punched to the ground at a bus stop in an initial altercation, before being set upon and chased by Saltan and two others.

Saltan was caught CCTV stabbing the man repeatedly in the groin, before dragging him into the street and leaving him bleeding heavily on the ground.

The injured man’s artery had been slashed and he was technically dead for 20 minutes as police and paramedics made desperate attempts to save his life.

He was eventually brought back to life by emergency surgery and heart massage in the street, and has now made a full recovery, the Met Police said.

Saltan fled to Switzerland after the Boxing Day 2019 attack, and was arrested when he flew back into the UK on May 26, 2020.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article in public, and was jailed for life in prison yesterday at Wood Green crown court.

Judge John Dodd QC ordered that Saltan, from Tottenham, serve at least seven years and four months in prison before being considered for release.

Metropolitan Police Detective Constable Sipho Gumpo, who led the investigation, said Saltan refused to talk in interview and has never given an explanation for the violence that night.

"This was a merciless attack and it was extremely lucky that the victim pulled through after his ordeal.

“Not once has Saltan uttered a word of explanation, or remorse, for his crime. He will now have time in prison to think about that night and I hope, at some point, it dawns on him what a cowardly and horrific thing he did.

“The victim has since made a full recovery and, while this sentence won’t ever make this right, I am glad we’ve been able to secure justice for him.”
