Police are hunting a blood-spattered car after a man died in an alleged hit-and-run crash early this morning.

Shocked people had called emergency services to report a man, believed to be in his 20s, lying prone in the road with serious head injuries.

Officers from Surrey Police were called out to the crash in Portsmouth Road, Guildford, at around 3am.

Paramedics also rushed to the scene but, despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "Although the investigation into the man’s death is still in the early stages, it is believed his injuries are consistent with being involved in a road traffic collision.

"A thorough search of the area was conducted but the vehicle has not yet been traced.

"Officers believe the vehicle will have sustained significant damage and possibly will have had traces of blood on it."

Road closures were put in place along the A3100 between Guildford and Artington while inquiries were carried out this morning.

Police are asking anyone who suspects someone they know was involved in the crash to contact them or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
