Human rights activists and lawyers are to monitor Scotland Yard’s use of Tasers amid concern over the deployment of the weapon in London.

The Metropolitan Police’s new “oversight committee” is to include members of Amnesty International, the Association of Black Lawyers and mental health charities, as well as politicians.

The move comes after criticism that the Met failed to justify a decision to triple the number of officers trained to use Tasers last year.

Around 3,700 officers in London are trained to use the 50,000-volt weapon, which police say is safer than firearms, batons and dogs.
