Levi Bellfield has denied murdering schoolgirl Milly Dowler just days after details of his alleged confession were made public.

The serial killer, who was given a life sentence in 2011 for the brutal slaughter of the 13-year-old, has made a legal complaint to Surrey Police claiming that covert recording techniques were used during an informal interview.

The complaint comes just two days after the Dowler family made public details of the confession from Bellfield, who now goes by the name of Yusuf Rahim after converting to Islam.

The harrowing statement from Milly's family said Bellfield told police he abducted the schoolgirl and then drove her to his mother’s house where he raped her in broad daylight before torturing her for hours and then strangling her to death.

Writing to two senior police officers, Bellfield’s solicitor Julie Cooper said: “We request the tape recording of the alleged confession; the attendance notes relating to the alleged confession; the circumstances surrounding the alleged confession and we would be grateful if you would confirm or deny whether a covert tape was being used during the course of the interview with Mr Rahim and we look forward to your early response.”

The Telegraph reported Surrey Police has had to take the complaint seriously, adding the matter had been referred higher within the force.

Milly was abducted in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on March 21, 2002 as she made her way home from school.

Her body was found on September 18 about 25 miles from her home.

Bellfield was sentenced to life in prison for her murder in 2011.

He is also serving life sentences for the murders of Amelie Delagrange, 22 and Marsha McDonnell, 19, and the attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.
