A 33-year-old man has died in hospital after being stabbed during a fight in Liverpool city centre during Champions League celebrations.

Merseyside Police have arrested two men from Toxteth, aged 19 and 24, on suspicion of murder after the incident on Sunday morning.

The force said officers were called to a fight outside the Wild Cat and Ink bars on Back Colquitt Street at about 3am.

On arrival, they found two men with knife wounds and chased a third man who was arrested nearby.

A knife believed to have been used in the incident was recovered from the scene.

The 33-year-old, from Liverpool city centre, who suffered a stab wound to his chest, was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he later died.

The 24-year-old, who had a knife wound to his arm, was also taken to hospital and subsequently arrested.

The incident occurred as football fans celebrated Liverpool's victory in the Champions League final earlier in the evening.

A spokesman from Merseyside police said the match's result had meant the city centre was "particularly busy".

But he added: "At this moment in time there is nothing to link it to the football."

Detective inspector Allison Woods, said: "The investigation is in its early stages and the motive for the attack is unknown.

"However, we understand the men were known to each other and the attack was targeted.

"At this time it is believed that the 33-year-old victim, who lived in the city centre, was involved in an altercation with two men.

"Two men, aged 19 and 24 years, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be interviewed by detectives.

"The family of the deceased have been informed and a family liaison officer will be supporting them at this tragic time.

"The city centre was really busy in the early hours of this morning and I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has any information which could help us with our inquiries to contact us."

Police said the scene of the incident has been cordoned off for forensic examinations and officers are making inquiries and examining CCTV.

A post mortem will be carried out to establish the victim's cause of death.
