A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of killing a one-year-old girl.

Police were alerted to the incident by staff at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey, after the youngster, who lived in Egham, was admitted with serious injuries on Wednesday.

The girl, who was approaching her second birthday, was later transferred to St George's Hospital in Tooting, south London, but died yesterday afternoon.

A 24-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man have both been arrested on suspicion of murder, assault occasioning GBH and child neglect. They are currently being held in police custody.

The toddler has not yet been formally identified and a post mortem examination to establish cause of death will take place in due course.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Preston, from the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: "The death of such a young child is extremely tragic and officers are currently carrying out a full and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the injuries she sustained.

“Two people are currently in custody and enquiries are ongoing at this time.”
