A man has been charged after an attack on an elderly stroke patient in a central London hospital that may cost the victim his sight.

Doctors fear the patient will be left blind after both his eye sockets were fractured in the assault at University College Hospital, in Euston, on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "We can confirm that a patient was assaulted at University College Hospital on Tuesday, and we immediately contacted the police.

"We are now supporting the patient who was assaulted, and the police in their investigation."

Lee Foster, 68, of Packington Street, Islington, was charged on Wednesday with causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the attack.

He will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on July 29.
