A murder hunt is under way after a man died three months after being beaten in an “unprovoked” attack in west London.

Satnam Singh, 45, died in hospital from a head injury after he and a friend were assaulted by a man armed with a baseball bat in Hayes in March.

Detectives today announced a £10,000 reward for information saying they could find no real motive for the assault.

Mr Singh, who works in the building trade, was walking with a friend in Atlee Road when a silver car drove up and a man got out and attacked the pair with a baseball bat. The man got in the car which then drove off.

Moments earlier, the pair had exchanged words with another man in the road who was then seen talking on a mobile phone.

Mr Singh was taken to hospital for treatment but his condition deteriorated last week and he died from his injuries on May 23.

His friend, a 28-year-old man, was not seriously injured.

Detective Inspector Jon Meager, who is leading the inquiry, said: “Satnam was viciously attacked nearly three months ago and had remained in hospital with his family hardly leaving his side. His loved ones have been left completely devastated by his death.

“While there is no evidence at this time to suggest a racial motivation, officers retain an open mind as to the reason for the attack. I am convinced that the answer lies within the local community.”

Satnam’s uncle Jasbinder Singh Siekham spoke of his family’s grief: “Satnam was my nephew, he was also my friend.

"Satnam’s wife simply cannot understand what’s happened and I’m struggling to comfort her.

"The whole family is devastated by this terrible attack. We all need to understand why this has happened and who has done it. We need to find peace.”

There have been no arrests.

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 020 8358 0200 or contact Crimestoppers for the reward on 0800 555 111. The reward is valid for three months.
