A man from east London who travelled to Syria to fight with Islamic State has been jailed.

Mohammed Uddin, of Wilmington Gardens, Barking, left the UK on November 4, 2014, with the intention of joining ISIS and engaging in combat.

He crossed the border back into Turkey on December 12 the same year and was detained by authorities in Gaziantep as he did not have any travel documents.

Uddin, 29, flew back to Gatwick on December 22 where he was stopped by counter terrorism officers.

Security checks led officers to suspect he had been involved in terrorist-related activity and he was found in possession of extremist material.

He later admitted a charge of preparing acts of terrorism and was jailed for seven years at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday.

Sue Hemming, head of special crime and counter terrorism at the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “It was very clear from the conversations recovered from electrical devices that Uddin had meticulously planned his trip so that he would be able to get to Syria undetected.

"Online searches had been carried out relating to 'Islamic State fighting', which strongly implied a more sinister purpose to his trip - rather than a holiday as he had previously claimed.”
