A man was killed in a crash minutes after police tried to flag down his car in east London.

Officers on a routine patrol in Hackney flagged down the blue BMW at 11.30pm last night but it sped off without stopping.

Police later found the car abandoned after it had collided with a number of parked vehicles on the De Beauvoir Estate in Islington.

Officers searched the area and found a man collapsed on the ground with serious injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene but the man was pronounced dead at midnight.

A number of other men were said to have been in the car but escaped on foot.

The family of the dead man, who is in his late 20s, has been told.

An internal investigation into the death has been launched by police and the police watchog has been informed of the incident.

The Met refused to say if officers were in pursuit of the vehicle at the time it crashed.
