The mother of a moped theft suspect chased down by Hollywood superstar Tom Hardy has said she hopes her son will “get the help he needs”.

The actor performed a citizen's arrest this week when he sprinted through the streets of Richmond before grabbing a 16-year-old who allegedly stole a moped.

The mother of a boy who was arrested in connection with the incident told The Mirror her son had conditions including ADHD, conduct disorder and autism, and had “no understanding of the world around him”.

She said: “This isn’t a scummy, naughty child.

“People with mental health issues need support and cry out for help in many different ways.”

She said: “I’m desperate for him to get the help he needs.”

The boy has been released on bail since his arrest.
