A motorist who mowed down a biker and left him for dead as he walked away chatting on his mobile phone has been jailed for eight and a half years.

Darren February, 32, killed Kenneth Baldwin, 51, while driving on the wrong side of the road at up to 58mph in Holland Park on December 14 last year.

As Mr Baldwin lay nearby, February, of North Kensington, cleared his girlfriend’s Vauxhall Astra of evidence linking him to the crash and fled. He evaded capture for a day, refused to be interviewed and lied about the circumstances of the crash, which took place in St Ann’s Road at about 5am.

He later admitted causing death by dangerous driving and while driving uninsured.

At Southwark crown court yesterday, he offered a letter to his victim’s ex-wife Meryl Sadler-Baldwin, telling her: “I’m remorseful, I’m sorry, that’s all I can say.”

Judge Peter Testar, however, who jailed February and banned him from driving for a decade, said: “The apology he purports to give is very hollow. I’m sorry to say it is an insult to the man he killed and to the man’s family.”
