A murder investigation has been launched after a 16-month-old girl from Newham, east London, died from a head injury.

The toddler, from the E13 postcode area, died on Tuesday last week after being taken to hospital on September 13.

A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm on September 14 and has since been released on bail.

A post-mortem examination at Great Ormond Street Hospital found the cause of death was a head injury.

The toddler's family has been told about the investigation.

The Met said in a statement: "Officers know the identity of the child and next of kin have been informed. She is not being named at this stage."
