An elderly woman is fighting for life after being hit by a cyclist on a busy central London shopping street.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident, which involved a female pedestrian and a cyclist, at about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, suffered a severe head injury and has been rushed to a central London hospital in a critical condition, police said.

Pictures posted on social media showed a number of emergency services vehicles at the scene, as a large part of the road was cordoned off.

Oxford Street was closed in both directions between Davies Street and Duke Street.

One Twitter user wrote: "There's been a major incident on Oxford Street."

Buses were on diversion and pedestrians and road users were warned to avoid the area.
