A stabbing victim was treated for serious injuries on the roadside after an early morning attack on a street in south London today.

The victim, whose age and gender were not immediately available from police, was stabbed on Newington Butts in Elephant Castle at about 5am.

A photograph shared by ambulance crews showed the victim's clothing discarded on the blood-spattered pavement next to a paramedic's bag.

A spokesman for Southwark Police said the patient was taken to hospital for further treatment, but their injuries were not considered "life-threatening or life-changing".

Ambulance crews were subsequently praised for their speedy work at the scene, which was said to have prevented more serious injuries.

Inspector Kelvin Robbins from Southwark Police tweeted: "Honestly the street side trauma care @Ldn_Ambulance (collectively) provide is world class".

In another Twitter post, a spokesman for the London Ambulance Service's Joint response units called for an end to street violence.

He said: "Responded with @MPSSouthwark to a victim stabbed, taken to A&E as a priority with @LDNairamb #putheknivesdown."

MPS Southwark tweeted: "Happy to report victim sustained neither life threatening or changing injuries. But as with any such injury, it could so easily be different.

"Grateful to colleagues @LAS_JRU @LDNairamb and a slightly off-borough @MPSWForest unit in providing a 1st class response to a stabbing."
