Police investigating a report that a 14-year-old girl was snatched and raped by a gang of men in Harrogate have said the incident did not happen.

Two men arrested in connection with the complaint made on February 16 have now been released without charge, officers said.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Police investigating the report of a serious sexual assault in Valley Gardens, Harrogate, on February 16, have concluded their investigation.

"Officers would like to reassure the public that the incident was not as first reported and that no attack took place in Valley Gardens.

"The girl involved continues to receive support from specialist agencies."

She added: "North Yorkshire Police take all reports of sexual assault seriously and will always conduct a thorough investigation."
