Police last night shot a man following reports of a gun being fired from a balcony in north London.

The Valentine's night incident, which has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for investigation, took place at Franklin House in Hendon.

Firearms officers arrived at the scene at around 8.15pm. A 48-year-old man, who is white, was shot and hospitalised with serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

An officer was also hospitalised but has since been discharged.

Scotland Yard's Directorate of Professional Standards was informed and the incident was referred to the IPCC who have begun an independent investigation.

Trident will investigate any firearms offences the 48-year-old man may have committed during this incident.
