Another senior Met police officer is being investigated for alleged misconduct, it emerged today.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Mark Simmons is the third senior officer in the force to face an inquiry by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

He is accused of “burying claims” made against one of his commanders and “doing nothing” about them.

An IPCC spokeswoman said: “The investigation is in its early stages and no officer has been served a notice of investigation at this stage.”

The case relates to an allegation that Commander Christine Jones, who oversees the Met’s operations in north-west London, blocked a male colleague’s promotion.

Commander Jones is accused of writing misleading references, allegedly misrepresenting other people’s views in relation to a promotion application.

In the case of Mr Simmons, the Independent Police Complaints Commission will also scrutinise whether the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards failed to act properly over an initial complaint about the alleged incident.

Two civilians in the Met are also facing allegations of misconduct relating to the claims.

Last month it emerged that Assistant Commissioner Pat Gallan was facing a formal inquiry over claims she bullied a colleague.

Meanwhile, Met chief Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe is facing further criticism over the cost of his £65,000 company Range Rover.

A Freedom of Information request showed it cost the equivalent of nearly four patrol cars and cost £25,000 more than the next most expensive vehicle in the Met’s fleet.

Sir Bernard has insisted his car is not a luxury and his old Range Rover kept breaking down.
