Two men have been arrested in connection with an “unprovoked” assault which left a father of four critically ill in hospital.

The men, aged 20 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of GBH after separately handing themselves in to a south London police station last night following publicity which showed 39-year-old Eddy Nganji in a medically induced coma in his hospital bed.

Mr Nganji was attacked outside a late-night grocery store in Lower Road, Lewisham in the early hours of Tuesday August 8.

He was approached by two men, one of whom struck him over the head with a blunt object. Police say the attack was so severe that doctors are unable if he will ever recover enough to live a normal life again.

Scotland Yard said the two men were interviewed in custody about the attack today.
