A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a baby girl was found lifeless on a bus.
Scotland Yard today said the three-month-old baby died in hospital after being discovered in Stratford yesterday.
Police and paramedics were called to reports of an unresponsive baby on a route 25 bus at 10.20am on Wednesday in Carpenter Road at the junction with High Street.
Detectives said a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Wednesday and were in custody at separate east London police stations.
A 27-year-old woman was arrested by officers at the hospital while a 52-year-old man was held at an address in Newham later the same day.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Friday, 30 September at St Thomas' Hospital.
The baby has yet to be identified.
Police said an incident room has opened at the Homicide and Major Crime Command under Detective Chief Inspector Gary Holmes.
DCI Holmes said: "The death of any child is tragic and we would appeal for anyone with information to please come forward as soon as possible to help with our enquiries."
