Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a “much-loved” 16-year-old was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Karim Samms, 16, was shot in the chest and found injured in Roebourne Way, North Woolwich, near City Airport, on Friday, April 7.

Emergency services raced on the scene at 10.44pm but Karim, who had been meeting a friend, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man in his 20s was found shot in Claremont Close later the same evening and was taken to hospital.

He has now been discharged, Scotland Yard said.

Police believe both were shot in the same incident nearby on Pier Parade just before officers were called.

An 18-year-old man and 17-year-old were arrested in east London on Wednesday.

Karim was about to become a qualified fitness instructor at Fight for Peace, a boxing academy close to where he died which trains and educates youths to keep them out of gangs.

Days after his death, his mother Joyce spoke at the spot where he was shot, which was covered in flowers, candles and tributes to the teenager.

She told the Standard: “I can’t stop crying. I have to come here, it makes me feel closer to him.

“He was innocent, he wasn’t related to whatever problem they had - that’s what makes it so heartbreaking. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body.

“He was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Founder and director Luke Dowdney of Fight for Peace also paid tribute to Karim after his death.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened following the tragic death of Karim Samms, a long time and much loved member of our London Academy," he said.

“Karim was shot and killed in North Woolwich on Friday evening, aged 17. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

A post-mortem examination held on Monday gave the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest.
