A man was shot early today as armed officers swooped on suspected robbers in south west London.

Officers from the Met's Flying Squad assisted by firearms officers descended on a small residential street in Wimbledon shortly after 8am on Monday.

Witnesses claimed the suspect was shot in an exchange of fire with police after a stake-out outside a Sainsbury’s store.

The man suffered a gunshot wound during the pre-planned "proactive" operation.

He was taken by London Ambulance Service to a London hospital. Another man was arrested for conspiracy to rob.

A builder described how police swooped moments after a white armoured cash delivery van pulled up outside a Sainsbury’s Local in Haydons Road.

He said: “Within two seconds there was an altercation with two armed robbers. One of them ran into a cul-de-sac but when he saw he wasn’t going anywhere he shot back at the police and they shot him. It was anything from seven to 11 shots. We hit the deck.”

He claimed some of the officers were hidden behind bushes in a nearby park.

A Twitter account called Haydons Road SW19 tweeted that armed police were at the scene but the situation was “under control & no one else in danger”.

Today forensic officers were working on what appeared to be a crowbar discarded in the street as well as a VW Golf car parked nearby.

Scotland Yard said the man was shot at around 8.10am in Lacock Close.

He has been taken to hospital but police said his exact condition was not known.

Several roads in the area, including Haydons Road, were closed during the incident.

The Met refused to say if the suspects had fired at officers or give further details of the Flying Squad operation.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said it had launched an investigation into the shooting.

London Ambulance Service, which was called at 8.12am to reports of an incident, said: “We treated a person at the scene and took them as a priority to a major trauma centre.”

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "A man has been shot during a pre-planned police operation in Wimbledon.

"The incident happened at about 8.10am on Monday, December 3 in Lacock Close.

"A proactive operation was conducted by officers from the Met’s Flying Squad assisted by firearms officers.

"During the course of the operation, one man was shot by police."

He added: "A second man has been arrested for conspiracy to rob.

"The Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed.

"A number of roads in the area, including Haydons Road, have been closed and a forensic scene is in place.

"The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an independent investigation."
