A young woman who fell to her death from a fourth floor flat in north London was heard screaming by horrified neighbours for “an hour” beforehand.

Murder detectives are investigating the unexplained death of 22-year-old Jourdain Baptiste, who plunged from the balcony of her home in Enfield.

Police were called to Gainsborough House, a 10-storey housing block, at 1.42am on Friday.

The woman was found on grass outside the block and paramedics treated her before she was taken to an east London hospital. She died later that day.

A 24-year-old man, who is believed to be known to the woman, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He has been released on police bail.

One neighbour, a mother-of-two who lives on the ninth floor, said she had heard screaming for “about an hour.” She said: “I have never ever heard anyone scream like that before.

“She was such a beautiful young lady with so much going for her.”

Another, who lives on the seventh floor, said: “I could hear screams and cries from a few floors below me. I then heard a loud noise and looked outside to see a body lying on the grass.”

Today work colleagues paid tribute to Ms Baptiste. David Blount, managing director of Liberty Gas, a central heating engineering company, said: “Everyone who’d ever had the privilege of working with her found her a pleasure to work with. The company’s heartfelt sympathy goes out to Jourdain’s family and friends at this extremely distressing time.”

Police have continued to appeal for information about the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Neale Baldock of the HMCC said: "This is a sad case whereby a young woman's life has been tragically cut short.

"We are appealing for witnesses or anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible.

"We are especially keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what occurred on the victim's balcony prior to her fall to help us with our investigation."

Anyone with information should call police officers on 020 8345 1570 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
