Pro-life charity tells abortion centres to put baby-scented candles in clinic waiting rooms

Controversial: The charity suggested the baby-scented candle should be put in clinic waiting rooms

An anti-abortion charity has been labelled “sick and manipulative” after suggesting abortion counselling centres put baby-scented candles in their waiting rooms.

Stanton Healthcare Belfast, a pro-life charity, posted a picture of the Yankee Baby Powder scented candle and suggested they should be placed in the waiting rooms of Crisis Pregnancy Centres.

Crisis centres provide support for pregnant women, with some giving counselling against abortions.

In a Facebook post, Stanton Healthcare Belfast said: “[We] would recommend to all crisis pregnancy centre’s (sic) the new baby powder Yankee Candle.

'Sick': the charity posted a picture of the candle on their Facebook page

“It just smells like a newborn baby.”

According to the Metro the charity, which claims to treat pregnant women with respect and compassion, has been deleting any negative comments off the post.

Among those reportedly deleted was one saying the post was “sick and manipulative” and another adding: “Do these candles come in the scents of shame, stigma or social isolation?”

Vix Proctor, Marie Stopes UK’s head of communications, said the post was a “ridiculous attempt to manipulate women and restrict their right to choose”.

“Women decide to have abortions for very real, personal reasons that aren’t going to disappear because of a scented candle,” she added.

The Standard has contacted Stanton Healthcare Belfast for comment.
