A male contraceptive could be available in six months, Indian scientists have revealed.

The injection is administered in the groin and lasts for thirteen years.

US researchers are working on a similar XY product but their version is still under development.

Germany also trialled a male contraceptive in 2016 but it was not continued due to side effects of acne and mood changes.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has successfully completed clinical trials and has sent the creation to its national drug controller for approval.

It is designed as a replacement for a surgical vasectomy, which is considered the only male sterilisation method available in the world.

ICMR senior scientist, Dr RS Sharma told the Hindustan Times: "The product is ready, with only regulatory approvals pending with the Drugs Controller.

"The trials are over, including extended, phase three clinical trials for which 303 candidates were recruited with 97.3 per cent success rate and no reported side-effects.

"The product can safely be called the world’s first male contraceptive."

The birth control has to be injected under local anaesthetic by a registered medical professional.

It is made from a polymer - a chemical compound bonded together in long repeated chains - and is applied in a sperm duct tube.
