A hospital rated as the best in the United States is to open its first clinic in London.

The Mayo Clinic will offer £5,000 “health MoTs” targeted at executives and wealthy individuals near Harley Street.

These include a 75-minute initial consultation — almost eight times longer than with an NHS GP — and two to three days of “head to toe” diagnostic scans and investigations looking for early signs of cancer, heart disease and other conditions.

It is part of a drive towards “bespoke” preventative healthcare that analyses family medical history, age and lifestyle to enable patients to remain healthy.

Patients will also benefit from the Mayo’s pioneering research as UK-based physicians consult with their colleagues in the US. The Mayo has health campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota.

Dr Kevin Fleming, a US physician who is one of a start-up team of four doctors, told the Standard: “We spend more time face-to-face with the patient than anybody else. In England, [NHS] appointment times are among the lowest in the world, at nine minutes 10 seconds.

"In France it’s 16 minutes. In the US it’s 21 minutes. Ours are 75 minutes. You can ferret out what people are really concerned about.”

The seven-floor clinic is being built in Portland Place, opposite the BBC, and is due to open in September. It involves a partnership with Oxford University and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes the John Radcliffe hospital.

Patients who require surgery or further treatment will be referred on to a network of top consultants in London, Oxford or back to the NHS.

The Mayo’s longer-term aim is to establish its own hospital in the UK.

The Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit organisation that has been providing preventative healthcare since the Sixties.

It was voted the best hospital in the US by the US News and World report in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The Mayo chose to invest in London because of its status as a global financial hub and expects to see 100 to 110 patients a week, 60 of them new and the remainder on return visits.
