At least 100,000 properties in south and west London have been left with no running water or a limited supply after a major water pipe burst in Hampton.

Schools, businesses and local services were forced to close across Hounslow, Hampton, Twickenham, and Kingston, after a pipe burst at the Thames Water works on Wednesday morning.

Shops were emptied of their supplies of bottled water as residents resorted to panic buying.

Residents in Whitton, Teddington and Isleworth have also been affected. Ealing Council revealed that some residents in the borough were also without water.

This afternoon, Thames Water said at least 100,000 properties have no water or low water pressure as their engineers worked to fix the problem.

They were unable to say when water might return.

Teddington Memorial Hospital and Teddington Health & Social Care Centre have been hit by the water crisis with all planned clinics and sessions being cancelled.

The Urgent Treatment Centre has also closed although hospital wards remain open at this time, the Hounslow and Richmond NHS Trust said.

Thames Water said they were "really sorry" for not providing the service customers expect today and were "working hard" to fix the problem.

A spokesperson told the Standard: “We’ve now opened a bottled water station at the public car park near Hampton Pub, The Avenue, TW12 3RA.

"We’re also still working hard to fix the burst at our water works in Hampton.

"We’ve been able to bypass the burst to add extra water into our network, which should help to improve your water pressure.

"When your water supply returns, please run your cold kitchen tap for a few minutes to help clear any trapped air or particles."

It comes after nearby supermarkets were cleared out of water bottles and many residents tweeted to ask when emergency supplies would be issued.

One twitter user recovering from surgery asked if anyone knew when bottled water was being distributed, adding she "can't carry heavy things and my local is out of bottled."

Kerry Watts also wrote prior to Thames Water's latest update: "5 hours without water - surely its time to get some bottles out to the most needy?"

Twickenham MP Sir Vince Cable tweeted that he had been in touch with Thames Water to ensure those most in need were given water.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Due to a major water burst in the Hampton Court area, and no estimated time of the water supply being restored today, racing is abandoned #kempton

Hundreds of local services, businesses and restaurants closed their doors, including Chiswick Library, YMCA White House, Georgias Kitchen and Teddington Pools.

The evening horse racing at Kempton Park Racecourse has also been abandoned.

Whilst businesses are closing, the Flying Cloud cafe by Teddington Lock announced they still had water and offered to make teas and coffees for those without water.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “It is unacceptable that so many people are left without water for several hours with little or no information on when supplies will be restored.

“My team at City Hall is liaising with Thames Water, emergency services and borough officials. We expect Thames Water to get a grip on this as soon as possible and to compensate all of those affected.”

Hampton Court Palace said they have also been affected by 'water issues' but will remain open with the Music Festival going ahead tonight.

A palace spokesman said: "We have contingency plans in place and will be monitoring the situation throughout the day.”

Some schools in the areas affected have been closed because of the lack of water supply.

Hampton School, Buckingham Primary School and Hampton High are among those that have been closed this morning.
