5,000 to take the plunge in Docklands

10 April 2012

More than 5,000 swimmers, including elite athletes and "open water virgins", are set to take part in a mile-long dip in Docklands.

The Royal Victoria Dock event on May 26 will be the last in the area before the "lockdown" for the Olympic Games.

Last year, world 10k open water champion Kerri-Anne Payne and her fiancé, double Commonwealth gold medallist Dave Carry, took part in the elite race.

This year the British Gas Great London Swim is inviting businesses to take part by entering teams of four. They can be all-male, female or mixed and those with the fastest average times will receive a trophy and medals.

The event is one of five across the UK, including one at Windermere.
