Anthony Bird murder: Man appears in court accused of 1980 west London barman killing

A man has appeared in court accused of an unsolved murder in west London more than 40 years ago.

Barman Anthony Bird, 41, was found naked with his wrists bound at his flat in in Kensington Gardens Square on June 6 1980, days after he did not turn up for work.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was strangulation.

John Paul, 60, from Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill, appeared at the Old Bailey by video-link on Tuesday after he was last week charged with murder.

He spoke to confirm his name and date of birth but was not asked to enter a plea to the charge.

Judge Mark Dennis QC remanded Paul in custody ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing at the same court on August 17.
