City workers can’t get enough plum pudding after a local wine bar pledged to hide a solid gold sovereign worth almost £300 in one portion served before Christmas Day.

The banking equivalent of Willy Wonka’s golden ticket has sent demand soaring for the pudding, at £6 a slice, making it the most popular item on the menu at the Factory House in Leadenhall Market, with some customers ordering several portions at a time.

Andrew Rhodes, general manager of the wine bar, said: “In Dickens’s time, the usual choice would be to bury a threepence or sixpence coin in the pudding. At The Factory House we want to spread as much festive cheer as possible — so it had to be a gold sovereign worth hundreds of pounds.”

The 22 carat-gold sovereign was made by the Royal Mint and weighs 7.99 grams with 7.32 grams of pure gold content.

The winner will also be treated to a complimentary bottle of champagne to toast their good fortune.
