Boris Johnson ‘should boost safety and make London a 20mph city’

Boris Johnson today came under pressure to improve road safety by introducing a blanket 20mph limit in central London.

The Mayor faced the calls after the City became the third borough to impose the lower limit with a promise to enforce it rigorously. London Assembly Green party member Jenny Jones said London should follow the example of Portsmouth, which was Britain’s first 20mph city. Camden and Islington have voted for a 20mph limit which is also being introduced on most roads in Southwark and Hackney.

Ms Jones said the Mayor could make 20mph the default speed limit in London and then discuss exemptions for some main roads. She said: “Putting up signs and changing the culture is cheaper and better value for money than spending decades rolling out speed cushions and chicanes across every corner of London.”

She said that the Met police should follow the City police’s pledge to enforce the new speed limits and also use average distance speed cameras.

In a statement, TfL said: “We are supporting boroughs looking to introduce 20mph limits, and will always consider 20mph limits where appropriate on our own road network.”
