A boy aged six was killed when he was hit by a car as he walked with his mother just yards from a primary school in south east London.
Police said the boy died in hospital just over an hour after the collision in Thamesmead last night.
He was with his mother and other family members near the St John Fisher Catholic Primary School.
The child, who has not been named, is thought to have run into the road and was struck by the car, a Honda CRV.
Relatives put the injured boy into another car and began driving him to hospital before meeting an ambulance about 10 minutes later. He was transferred to the ambulance which took him to hospital but he died at about 7.20pm.
Police said the accident took place in St John Fisher Road near the junction with Kale Road at about 6.15pm. The driver of the car stopped at the scene but was not arrested.
Hannah Cocksedge, 22, who lives nearby and has a son, Mackenzie, four, said: “It is a dangerous road. They need some traffic calming measures. I have feared for my own son here, it is a tragedy.”
Resident Elizabeth Cooper, 46, said: “This was an accident waiting to happen. They should have speed ramps on Kale Road. The traffic swings round there far too quickly.”
Eyewitness Darren Carr, 42, said: “I heard screaming. His rucksack and shoes were in the road. It was so horrible. It was traumatic. The mum scooped him up in her arms.”
A card reading “RIP Angel” was left at the scene.
Police appealed for witnesses and anyone who saw the collision is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574.
