A British Airways steward collapsed and died in front of passengers on a busy flight at Heathrow Airport on New Year's Eve, according to reports.

First aid was reportedly attempted on the 52-year-old by a trained passenger but the staff member died in the rear galley on BA Flight 32, which was bound for Hong Kong.

Passengers were seated and doors were locked on the aircraft as it prepared to depart when the incident happened, The Sun reported.

The pilot urgently called for medical assistance and a member of the public attempted to save the steward.

Passengers were told the flight was cancelled due to a "medical emergency" and were rebooked onto another flight the following day.

British Airways told the Standard: "Our thoughts are with our colleagues' friends and family at this incredibly sad time."

It follows the death of another BA steward in the US on December 23, according to The Sun. The cabin crew worker was allegedly found dead in his hotel room after he failed to report for duty.

A source allegedly told The Sun: "Crew are frantic. These were two healthy people who suddenly dropped dead. There were no reported underlying health issues.

"The crew were family men, and leave devastated families in shock and disbelief."
