Currency bearing David Bowie's face is changing hands for up to four times what it's worth.
The Brixton Pound, which launched its first cash machine this month, can only be spent in the 300 local restaurants, shops and businesses signed up to the scheme.
But that hasn't stopped eBay sellers from as far away as Canada spotting the chance to make some extra cash of their own.
Current listings on the site include a B£10 Bowie note with a pricetag of £45.96, boasting it was produced in "England's transition town Brixton".
Even notes which don't feature the recently-deceased singer are being sold for vastly more than they are worth, with one B£5 note listed for £18.99.
Brixton Pound’s Managing Director Tom Shakhli said: "We can't control what third parties do with the notes. I think, good luck if you can get it.
"The people who are buying them should be fairly sceptical because we retail them ourselves from source and only charge a small mark-up for postage and packing.
"I don't know why anyone would want to pay so much for something that's in no way enhanced."
Local boy Bowie himself gave permission for his face to be used on the money back in 2011 and it became the most popular Brixton Pound item even before his death earlier this year
Mr Shakhli added: "Thankfully he was up for it when we asked for his permission.
"Since his death more people have become aware of it. This isn't someone who leant his name easily to things."
