A single decker bus was left charred after catching fire in south east London this afternoon.

The 108 was seen engulfed in flames in Lee Road, outside Blackheath station, shortly after 12.25pm.

Witness Christopher Holland told the Standard: "I was just on the way to the post office when a large amount of grey smoke began to fill the air from a nearby bus then there were several bangs and flames started to pour out from the rear end.

"It was quite scary and people were beginning to panic a bit as it was very close to the shops and parked cars - luckily the fire brigade arrived quickly and managed to put it before it spread any further."

The blaze was extinguished by 12.40pm and London Fire Brigade were praised on Twitter for their quick response to the blaze.
