Coffee customers labelled 'f***ers' on receipt in Westfield Stratford mocha shocker

12 August 2013

A student who went into a café to order a coffee got more than she bargained for when she was confronted with a receipt referring to the customers as “f***ers.”

Naomi Bloomer was waiting for her drink at Grind Coffee Bar at Westfield Stratford when she noticed a message on a customer receipt on a table.

In the middle of the receipt which listed items bought including a brownie, latte and mocha, were the words “f***ers all come at once”.

As it had clearly been written by a staff member taking the order, 22-year-old Ms Bloomer went to the cashier to complain. But instead of appearing sorry, he told her: “Yeah, we’ve been rammed.” University College London student Ms Bloomer, who lives in Kentish Town, said: “This receipt was just sitting there on the bar, clearly visible to customers. I just thought it was really inappropriate and so I complained.”

She wrote to customer services at Westfield three times following the incident on 6 July but was “fobbed off and ignored at every turn”.

Complaint: Naomi Bloomer spotted the receipt

She said: “I just wanted an apology, just a simple acknowledgement that this was wrong. The part that really gets to me is that they clearly don’t care about customer service at all.”

In her email to Westfield on the day she found the receipt, she wrote: “I asked the waiter/cashier if they always left such comments on the receipts, to which he said ‘yeah we’ve been rammed’.

“Not to mention the fact that there were four to six other people sitting at Grind tables at the time, this was absolutely unacceptable. There was no hint of apology or embarrassment.”

Dave Dickinson, owner of the New Zealand-run coffee bar, was today forced to apologise to Ms Bloomer. He said: "We strive for super-friendly antipodean customer service. So we apologise to the one person that didn’t experience this."
