Hackney council has taken legal action against a group of travellers who set up camp on Stoke Newington Common.

The move comes after residents complained music was "blaring" from the public space after caravans pitched up on the site three weeks ago.

Tweets demanding action against the group were sent to the council, police and Hackney MP Diane Abbott.

Hackney Pc Grace Turner has since tweeted: “Regarding travellers on Stoke Newington Common: we're working with the council & legal proceedings have begun to remove them.”

The council has confirmed it has launched legal proceedings after efforts to resolve the situation had failed.

On Friday it was revealed the travellers were given 48 hours to leave the common following the granting of a court order.

A council spokesman said: “The council are aware that a group of travellers have moved onto Stoke Newington Common and we are working to resolve the situation.

"There is a formal process involved, but we have been working through it as quickly as possible. We have now received a court order giving the travellers 48 hours to leave the common."
