A man has died after a fire broke out at a flat in Covent Garden.

London Fire Brigade sent around 15 firefighters to a blaze inside a ground floor home in Tavistock Street shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus found a man in the flat’s kitchen and said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The flat was part of a five-storey block in the busy tourist street which runs parallel to the Strand.

Three fire engines from Soho, Islington and Kensington stations were sent to the street.
