Crash victim wins payout for 'pioneering' treatment to restore hearing

Relieved: Nick Snow, who said he was pleased to be able to “look towards the future”
13 January 2014

A pedestrian who was knocked down by a speeding motorist is set to have his hearing restored thanks to a legal first.

Nick Snow, 31, from Hackney, was returning home from work when he was struck as he crossed the road in Stoke Newington in March 2011.

He suffered serious head injuries, multiple fractures and hearing loss on his right-hand side.

The driver was later found guilty of driving without due care and attention when travelling at more than 55mph in a 30mph zone.

Lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have now helped secure a “substantial” settlement for Mr Snow’s recovery, which includes the costs of pioneering ear implants to help restore his hearing.

It is understood to be the first time a settlement has included funding for the procedure, plus the costs of future cochlear implants.

Mr Snow said: “My rehabilitation and recovery from the accident has been a long process.

“I am pleased and relieved that my legal battle has now come to a close and I can move on with the rest of my life, look towards the future and return to the life I was living prior to the crash, as far as possible

“The settlement will provide me and my family with much needed financial support to contribute to my rehabilitation costs and also to be fitted with ear implants as my hearing suffered.

“My family have been a pillar of strength for me since the accident.

It is great to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

His solicitor, Laura Middleton-Guerard, a specialist serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Nick is an inspiration to others who suffer serious injuries and is proof that with the right support it is possible to get your life back on track.”

The cochlear implants are set to be fitted within the next few months.
