Blur frontman Damon Albarn celebrated St George's Day with a surprise knees-up in an East End pub this week.

Damon rattled through Britpop favourite Parklife in front of lucky punters at the Red Lion in Leytonstone on Wednesday night.

He joined self-styled Cockney duo The Gents after finishing up a gig to promote his new solo album Everyday Robots.

The Gents' lead singer Kristian Cockburn told today how Damon had got chatting to them in the pub before their respective sets and arranged to come back later for a sing along.

"When we arrived we were just setting up and Damon Albarn walked in with his band because he was doing a gig across the road," he told the Standard.

"We started our show and he hadn't returned so we just stopped and were having a pint - then he came back in and said 'what about doing the number?'"

Kristian, who has been a Blur fan for years, said singing with Damon had been an "amazing experience".

"He was just really game for it and up for it," he said. "We said we haven't got a mic and he said 'well I'll just shout!'

"He's a big hero of mine so for me it was just amazing. I first saw them [Blur] when I was only 16."

The Gents, who have toured together for seven years, gigs on the pub circuit and are due to appear at the FA Cup final in May to get Wembley in the mood for Arsenal's clash with Hull.

And Kristian now hopes to help Damon out on tour as he promotes his album.

He said: "I would love to do a support slot for him somewhere!"
